ALL SPECS USE BLOOD PRESENCE, Gylphs are included in the links.
Stats
Expertise: 6,5% or 26 Expertise needed for Dodge cap - Different specs gain the following Expertise:
Blood 6 - Frost 5 - Unholy 5 (these do show in character sheet)
Hit Rating: 8% is the Hit cap for special and 2H attacks, 27% -3% for Nerves of Cold Steel for DW, keep in mind that those 3% also add up to special attacks for DW, so you'd only need to have 5% Hit as DW to never miss specials.
Spell hit cap is 17% - 3% for Misery -3% for Virulence = 11% needed. Only a few skills of ours use spell hit cap, Icy Touch, Death Coil, Unholy Blight, Howling Blast AND Mind Freeze, however it's highly adviseable to get the 289 Hit Rating as DW Frost. Remember that spell hit cap is on a different conversion ratio than melee hit (check your spell tab in character screen). You will be very close to spell hit cap at 8% melee hit (with Virulence).
ArP Rating
This stat is going to be removed from WoW pretty soon and there have been loads of discussions about how valuable it is for certain classes and their specs. As for DKs I can now clearly say that ArP is good for all 3 specs, even Unholy. With the changes to Scourge Strike it's even better than Haste. In my opinion this is a good thing since I have never been a fan of Haste.
Strength
This is the best stat for all specs, and it's recommended to gem for Strength, especially if you are a person that changes specs as often as normal people change underwear. The only reason to not gem Strength would be that you are missing Hit for the 8% or you're playing DW and are missing Expertise for the Expertise cap.

Gargoyle
The best time to use a Gargoyle is when you have all trinket procs up combined with racials (Blood Fury) and on use items or enchants, like the engineering glove enchant. When you summon your Gargoyle it takes a snapshot of your stats and keeps it for the whole duration. A fully buffed Gargoyle can inflict some nasty damage. Bloodlust/Heroism will boost its damage by a lot, so even if you can't force trinkets to proc or have no timers up you should use it within those 45 sec. Make sure that you know when Bloodlust is used, so you don't waste your Gargoyle cooldown.
Sigil
Sigil of Virulence is what you should be using until you get your hands on the new Sigil of the Hanged Man.
Scourge Strike
The new SS has nothing in common with the old one, the only change to it is that it's better nowadays. The way SS works is that the initial hit deals physical damage, based on all talents, stats, buffs and debuffs. This physical hit triggers the shadow portion of SS, which is based on the amount of physical damage. So if you crit with the physical portion the shadow part will deal much more damage, but this shadow portion can't crit seperately anymore.
Prior to the SS nerf you were able to see some extreme numbers, 30k (combined crits) in raid situations or even more than 150k on Twins. Of course the shadow part won't hit for much if your physical part doesn't crit, but nevertheless this buff to SS clearly makes up for so much DPS that this one change only pushed Unholy DKs to a good single target DPS class, if played right.
Due to SS being physical to some degree and relying on crits on the physical part you'll want to prioritize your gear. In terms of stats it's Str = ArP > Crit > Haste > Agi with Icecrown gear (Hit and Expertise caps are more important than Str and ArP though). Crit is so good that even with a 4 Str socket bonus on a yellow socket you should use a 10 Str 10 Crit gem over a 20 Str gem. Note that the cloak enchant will change to 22 Agi instead of 23 Haste for Unholy DKs, not for other specs though.
Why 17/0/54 and 0/3 Morbidity?
Scourge Strike double dips into many talents and buffs/debuffs there is. Many people might wonder why a Blood subspec is superior to Black Ice which buffs the shadow portion of SS by 10%. So let's take a look at what we get by speccing into Blood, that's a total of 14% crit for SS (5% crit on everyting), 2h spec which gives us another 4% (double dips into SS), the static AP from Bladed Armor and some RP through Butchery. Now if we specced into Frost to get the 10% Shadow damage from Black Ice we'd have to sacrifice 10 points from Blood, that's 5% crit from Dark Conviction and the static AP from Bladed Armor.
All this just to gain 10% Shadow damage (doesn't double dip into SS) and 15% more damage on IT, which is barely noticeable. That 10% shadow damage from Black Ice results in roughly 5% overall damage, whereas with 5% crit from Dark Conviction you even gain more than 5% damage because of the increased shadow damage resulting from a melee SS crit. The difference between those 2 subspecs isn't too big, but Blood just wins out and I see no reason to take an inferior spec.
So now there is the question why 0/3 Morbidity. Morbidity might look cool because it has 15% more DC damage and it lowers your DnD CD by 15 sec, but in reality it's a pretty horrible talent in terms of single target DPS. Your DC gains so little from it that you will barely notice any difference on your Recount damage breakdown after a fight.
In addition to that you have to keep in mind that we generate a lot less RP now due to the IT glyph nerf and the rotation being more focused on SS. The result is that we lose some DCs per fight which leads to Morbidity being less valuable than it was in 3.2.2. I could probably write more about this topic and go into detail, but I'm sure most people would get bored of it and I must admit that calculating the exact value of each talent point is pretty boring, so we'll just leave that be.
Epidemic and Reaping
We skipped both talents in 3.2.2 because they were no DPS boost for our spec because of SS being weak and OB not being useful anymore. Nowadays we only use Epidemic with the current gear we have available because the 3 talent points we'd have to use to get Reaping are better spent elsewhere. Reaping is still a DPS increase once you obtain 2 part T10, but not before.
Haste
Haste has been an awesome stat for Unholy DKs until 3.3 went live, and it was horrible until SS got nerfed. But now that we use Necrosis its value went up, however it can't compete with other stats because of SS still being important even after the huge nerf it received.
Glyph of Disease
This glyph would be pretty awesome if it received no changes in 3.3, but it did and you can't roll diseases anymore. Back in 3.2.2 you could maintain your fully buffed diseases on 1 target for the whole time with this glyph because it just refreshed the diseases without taking a snapshot of your current AP value. That led to a decent DPS increase especially in AoE situations, however this is not the case anymore because now this glyph does take your current AP into account, making disease rolling not possible anymore for single target, but it's still a pretty good glyph for AoE because you don't have to use your runes to refresh diseases.
Ghoul Frenzy
It's useless, really. Don't use it for PvE.
Alternative Spec
Once you obtain the 2 part T10 bonus you'll want to use this spec for single targets. You always have to keep in mind that even after the nerf to SS it's still our hardest hitting ability, so we want to boost its damage by as much as possible. The 2 part bonus gives us a reason to use Reaping once again, so we remove a few points from the Blood tree to boost our beloved SS damge.
With that spec stick to the following rotation:
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- ![]()
As for AoE you just revert back to the classical Unholy spec. Necrosis is a pretty weak talent when it comes to AoE, so we just skip 2 points in it and move them to Morbidity. Reaping is also pretty worthless because we rarely get 2 Death Runes up at the same time.
Blood Rotation:
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-

- ![]()
Back to the basic rotation. Glyph of Dark Death is a DPS upgrade over Glyph of disease, the reason why it's like that is mentioned below in the change log. Well the rotation is pretty simple and I doubt that I need to explain anything, everybody should be able to pull it off.
Dancing Rune Weapon
Try to use Hysteria before you use DRW. Also monitor your procs like Unholy Strength from Rune of Fallen Crusader, trinket procs like Greatness and then use them with these. Nowadays you just need the minimum amount of 60 RP for DRW to last its entire duration of 17s and it's not affected by Runic Power Mastery anymore. Refreshing diseases when you use your DRW results in a tiny DPS increase.
Sigil
Sigil of Virulence is what will be used, the new Sigil of the Hanged Man is only a 19 Str upgrade and with its 15s proc duration it's going to be pretty hard to refresh the stacks before they fall off, because of the way Blood works. DS might be the hardest hitting ability, but it's not really the ability that yields the most DPS, keep that in mind.
ArP Trinkets
As you might have read on our forums we always recommend you to either use Grim Toll or Mjolnir Runestone. They are still good trinkets and with the introduction of Icecrown Citadel a new ArP trinket has been added. Deathbringer's Will is just amazing. It's not as good as the heroic version of Death's Choice because of its proc being RNG, but it's better than the normal version of Death's Choice. So spend your DKP on Death's Choice, it's really worth it.
Frost Rotation:

......
Side note: This rotation is very tight, you might end up having 0.5s left on your diseases before you use PT. In case your rotation fails make sure to reapply diseases as soon as possible. Also, it's no problem to cap RP, rather use OB as often as possible. Use FS when your runes are on CD, it's really hard to make a proper rotation because you only have a few seconds for using FS.
Procs
There are 2 procs which you should always be aware of, those are Killing Machine (KM) and Freezing Fog (Rime). Both combined result in a DPS increase, but on their own are of minimal importance. If you get a Rime proc but not KM you just don't use Howling Blast (HB), unless you are fighting 4 or more enemies.
If you have KM but not Rime you just use your runes and hope for a Rime proc. If that doesn't happen you just dump RP with FS and "waste" a KM proc on it. Once every 2 minutes you should use Deatchill to force a so called KMRime proc, you don't have to have a KM in order to make HB crit. Just to keep it short: don't ever use Rime on it's own, combined with KM is when you use it, but that doesn't necessarily hold true for the other way round.
Unbreakable Armor
The best time to use this ability is when you just used BS/PT, then you Blood Tap and pop Unbreakable Armor. Once you have done that make sure to cancel Blood Tap so you don't run into problems with a Death Rune disappearing. It's highly adviseable to use a cancelaura macro for Blood Tap. Even after the recent nerf in 3.2.2 this ability received, it still is a nice DPS boost because with the 1 minute cooldown and 20s uptime you have it up for 1/3 of the time, and it also fits in well with the 1 minute Blood Tap cooldown.
Sigil
Use Sigil of the Hanged Man, it'll be pretty easy to keep the 3 stacks up.
Weapons
This question is being asked often, so just to say it once and for all, don't ever use fast weapons for DW Frost. Even if you have coliseum weapons with 1.6 speed, ilvl 200 blue weapons with 2.6 speed will give you more DPS. The reason for that is because DW Frost has OB as main damage ability and so you want to use slow weapons in both hands for OB to hit harder. Unless your 1.6 weapon has 100 DPS more than your 2.6 weapon you should just give it a spot in your bank.
Alternative Spec
Use this spec if you have no Enhancement Shaman in your raid to buff you with Windfury Totem. This spec does less DPS than the other DW spec mentioned above, but the total raid DPS will increase with it if there is nobody else to provide 20% haste. Additionally the rotation is quite different because you can't use PT anymore to refresh diseases, so the rotation will be
-
-
-
-
-
-

-
-

- ![]()
This results in much more time to dump RP with FS, so don't ever overcap RP.
For all specs
Take advantage of Anti Magic Shell (AMS) to gain more RP which will result in a DPS increase. Mimiron P2 is a perfect example of when to use it, you get the Heat debuff -> you use AMS and have a full RP bar which you can dump, a great DPS increase. It might be hard for DW Frost to fit in the additional RP dumps because of the tight rotation, but taking less damage because of AMS is never wrong even if it means you are capping RP.
With the introduction of the T10 set and the nerf to the 4 part T9 bonus you'll want to get 2 parts T10 as soon as possible. I recommend getting the chest and shoulders first. Until you get those you should be using 4 parts T9 except the helm, use Faceplate of Thunderous Rampage instead.
The best professions for a DK are Blacksmithing and Jewelcrafting, that allows you to use the stats you desire instead of just AP if you were an enchanter or inscriptor for example.
Consumables:
Flask: Flask of Endless Rage
Food: Dragonfin Filet or Hit/Expertise Food if you aren't cap or at least close to it. You can also use Spiced Mammoth Treats to buff your pet if you're Unholy specced.
Potions:
Unholy: Potion of Speed before you use your Gargoyle, and you can also use an Indestructible Potion before you engage a boss.
Blood: Potion of Speed before you use DRW.
Frost: Insane Strength Potion try to use it at the same time as you use Unbreakable Armor, it's a great DPS boost.
Macros
I don't use many macros so I'll just list the ones I use, for the people who like using macros I suggest you just google it, personally I'm not a big fan of it.
Focus Macro
/focus
Very important for almost every bossfight.
Bone Shield or UA macro
#showtooltip
/cast Blood Tap
/cast Bone Shield
/cancelaura Blood Tap
Use this to not mess up your Death Runes. The best time to use it is when you just used your Death Runes and you see your Blood Runes being on cooldown with the other runes. You will have to hit the macro twice. Change Bone Shield with Unbreakable Armor if you're playing Frost.
Gargoyle Macro
#showtooltip Summon Gargoyle
/cast Blood Fury
/use Potion of Speed
/cast Summon Gargoyle
Remove the Blood Fury part if you're not an orc and add on-use trinkets if you have any.
Hysteria Macro
#showtooltip Hysteria
/cast [target=PlayerName] Hysteria
This buffs a certain player in the raid with Hysteria without you having to target him, I usually use it on myself.
DRW Macro
#showtooltip Dancing Rune Weapon
/cast [target=player] Dancing Rune Weapon
This macro spawns your DRW at you, and you should always be hitting a boss from his back.
Addons
ForteXorcist - An addon to track your diseases and your cooldowns, such as Gargoyle, DRW, UA etc. but it also shows internal trinket cooldowns for example your Greatness Card, but also Death's Choice and much more.
Omen - A threat meter, must have addon for tanks, but it's also important for DPS to know when to hold back.
Magic Runes - An addon to track the cooldown of your runes.
Personal Preference
Even after the nerf to huge nerf SS received and after some testing I can say that Unholy is still the best single target DPS spec for a DK. I received many questions asking if Blood is superior to Unholy now because they saw me having Blood as my main spec on the armory and here is the answer: No. We did some tests to see how much of an impact the nerf had, the result is that it's not that bad at all. We lost some DPS, but some changes to our spec can make up for that. We lost about 5% of our single target damage to the nerf, it's not that bad at all.
The thing with Blood is that HS can hit for almost as much as SS. In addition to that HS only uses 1 rune. But in the end HS alone can't make up for the loss of a ghoul, Wandering Plague, Unholy Blight, higher disease damage etc. I also made sure to check out how well Unholy scales with gear by equipping items with a lower item level. The results show that Unholy scales better with gear than Blood, so the difference between those 2 specs will grow larger with better gear.
The Frost rotation is very tight and bad latency, human failure or just movement bosses will result in a huge DPS loss. Many people consider Frost to be dead now and that is true to some extent, but keep in mind that not all raids have access to an Enhancement Shaman. In this case you'll want to bring a Frost DK to buff the raid. The first Frost spec I listed is the spec that yields the most personal DPS. It can't surpass other DK specs, but there are still quite some people that enjoy playing it, so I thought listing the best possible spec for those people won't hurt anyone.
Blood on the other hand has a much more relaxed and enjoyable rotation. It's not like the old Unholy rotation where you could eat a whole pizza between rotation transitions, but it's also not as tight as Frost. It offers a lot of DPS, especially the T10 set has really good stats for Blood. Hysteria and DRW are 2 timers which you'll have to use wisely to maximize your DPS at all times and the variety in the spec is what makes me enjoy Blood the most. It's not the highest single target DPS spec ingame, but it gets pretty close to Unholy.
Unholy is just the best AoE spec there is. It has its downsides like a boring rotation, micromanagement for your pet, but there is just absolutely no way around it when it comes to DPS. I hated Unholy in 3.2.2, but now I like it because it went back to it's roots, it's just like in 3.0 and 3.1 but with a lot more DPS. Keeping the pet alive was never a problem in Coliseum, and it won't be in ICC because of the changes to the Night of the Dead talent. All 3 specs should be using similiar gear in 3.3, so you can spec around for whatever reason or just stay Unholy because there really is no reason to spec Blood or Frost when it comes to DPS.
For any further questions and discussion please head over to the forums. This will probably be the last update before Cataclysm.
Shoutouts to the Ensidia Death Knights for being the best.
F.A.Q.
Q: Could you tell me which spec I should be playing, please?
Generally speaking you should be playing Unholy. If you're still unsure head over to this thread.
Q: I see many DKs gemming ArP, is it better than Strength for Blood?
No, especially after the nerf to ArP in 3.2.2 Str is a much better stat. DON'T EVER GEM ARP.
Q: Which trinket should I be using?
As for DPS, Greatness is one of the best trinkets you can get, and it's very good until you get Death's Choice x2. Generally speaking a double Death's Choice combination is the best for all specs until you get those nasty ICC 25 trinkets.
Q: Which is the best race for my DK?
It really depends on what aspect of the game you prefer.
Horde: Orc
Alliance (both PVP and PVE): Human
Alliance Tank: Night Elf
Q: Could the Ensidia DKs upload their UI, please?
Maybe, we'll see. Here you have a screenshot of my interface.
Q: Is Bone Shield still useful for a DPS DK?
It's 2% damage for 1 point and a 20% damage reduction in AoE situations, which is awesome.
If you decide to pick up this talent and don't know how to use it then here is a little explanation. The best time to use it is when all your runes are on CD, then you just Blood Tap, refresh Bone Shield and continue with your rotation. Make sure to cancel your Blood Tap buff as soon as possible to not mess up your Death Runes.
Q: Many DKs in high-end guilds are Unholy specced, why is that so? Is Unholy much better than other specs?
Unholy is the best AoE spec ingame, that's why many DKs are still using it. Is it still the best single target DPS spec? Yes it is, even after the nerf. It didn't even take an insane amount of testing to get to the conclusion that Unholy reigns supreme, just some simple math and common sense proved Unholy to be superior. Blood gets close to Unholy's single target DPS after the SS nerf, but it's still at the same level as Unholy.
And Unholy also provides Ebon Plague which increases disease damage of all raid members by 30%, no other class has that buff. Unholy DKs provide a ~5% DPS increase for Shadow Priests, they'll love you for that.
Q: Does that mean Unholy is better than Blood now?
Yes in almost every aspect. The only situation where Blood can beat Unholy is when you can cleave 2 mobs all the time, that's when Blood will shine.
Q: Will you be updating the BiS (Best in Slot) thread soon?
Yes I will, I'm just waiting for chardev.org to be updated with all ICC items. The thread can be found in this section of the forums as a sticky.
Q: Which enchant should I be using on my weapon?
Rune of the Fallen Crusader for Unholy and Blood. For Frost you use Fallen Crusader on the mainhand and Razorice on the offhand.
Q: Who should be getting my Hysteria from a DPS point of view?
You always use Hysteria on yourself, unless you are tanking. The reason for why it's being used on yourself is that without it you're just a filler spot in the raid, your DPS won't be competetive and you could just be Unholy or Frost instead doing more DPS. Blood without Hysteria is really bad :(
Q: Should I drop my 4 part T9 bonus for 2 part T10?
Yes you should, no matter which spec you are. The 2 part T10 bonus is even more important, try to get it ASAP. I recommend getting the chest and shoulders first.
Q: What's the best meta gem for my spec?
Blood and Frost: Relentless Earthsiege Diamond
Unholy: Chaotic Skyflare Diamond
The reason for why Unholy is using a different meta gem is that the Chaotic Skyflare Diamond also increases your spell crit damage by 3%, and spells play a major role in Unholy's damage.
Q: I just recently respecced to X and my dummy results show me that I do less DPS now. Am I doing something wrong?
Yes you are. Don't ever test your DPS on dummies, some talents don't work on them (Necrosis, Wandering Plague, Unholy Blight ...) and also you're missing crucial raid buffs and debuffs. The only way to compare specs is in an raid enviroment where you have all possible buffs/debuffs for both casters and melees.
Q: Is it important to not mouseclick any abilities?
Yes that's extremly important. You don't have to keybind all your spells, but make sure to keybind all abilities/potions that you might use during a fight, clicking will always be inferior. I for example have 3 different potions bound to certain keys on my keyboard, just find out what you're using all the time and make sure it's bound. You don't need to bind stuff like Find Herbs or your Blacksmithing tab, just use common sense and you'll become a better player.
Q: Could you explain what a priority system is, please?
Instead of rotations many DKs, including myself, are using a priority system over a set rotation because it's more flexible and it also can provide a decent damage boost. It's harder to use a priority system and it takes some practice to get used to it, but I'll try to explain how it works. Let's use Unholy as an example, the highest priority is to keep diseases up all the time, you apply diseases if you have runes up but diseases are not on your target. If runes are on CD but diseases aren't up you dump RP by using DC or if you have all trinket procs up and enough RP to summon a gargoyle you do that instead. The hardest hitting ability is SS, so you should use it as much as possible, but keep in mind that you have plenty of time as Unholy, so just dump RP if you see yourself in a situation where you'd overcap it. If you were Frost where time is of the essence then you can overcap RP in order to get more OB out, that's different for every spec and you should figure it out for yourself. It will take some practice for you to master it, but it's worth it for sure.
Q: Can we maybe get some DK PoVs in your upcoming ICC movies?
I'll make sure to fraps the interesting bosses, but it's not up to me which PoVs will be used for the final render, it depends a lot on stuff like visual quality, what do you actually see in the video, no playing mistakes etc. just keep your eyes open!
Q: Why do you still use Unholy Blight in your Unholy spec?
Even if it ticks for a low amount of damage it doesn't mean it's useless. Check your damage breakdown and UB will usually be 1% of your total damage, which is a lot considering you only have to spend 1 talent point in it. UB is still extremely efficient desipte the nerfs and resultant low ticks. It yields more damage for less points compared to other talents making it a must pick.
Q: SS got nerfed, is Unholy useless now?
The nerf didn't kill Unholy, it's still much better than it was in 3.2.2. SS hits much harder than it did before and Unholy still is a top-notch spec. Don't get demotivated by the nerf, the only thing it did was spreading out the balance. It'd be weird if Unholy was the best single target and AoE spec out of all classes, but if played right Unholy can still top the meters on every boss.
Q: What's your comment on the SS nerf?
I believe the nerf was justified because SS was way out of balance for PvE. However it's not ok to just completely change how the ability works. With the shadow portion of SS not being able to crit anymore Blizzard just made the wrong approach on how to nerf a class. Not only did they nerf our damage, but also did they change our stat priority. The "old" 3.3 spec didn't use much Haste at all, now Haste almost skyrocketed in value compared to the day before yesterday.
It's ok to nerf our damage, but it's not ok to force us to use completely different gear. So many changes affected our gearing options and that's really bad from Blizzard, especially once we obtain the piece we always wanted we can just throw it away because of a little change from Blizzard, I really don't know if that's the way to go.
Instead they should've just reduced the damage on SS or not let it double dip into almost every talent. In that way we would still deal less damage, but our itemization wouldn't be affected. I assume that players and Blizzard could live with that, but I guess it's already too late for it. On the other hand I believe it's much easier to implement a fix for SS the way they did, maybe SS gets changed in the next minor patch.
UPDATES:
01.12.10: Changed the code to HTML because BB code isn't supported anymore. You might encounter some bugs, please report them in this thread.
12.13.09: Some more clarification on which spec is better for single target DPS, check out the personal preference and F.A.Q. section. Added a headline for the latest update. And here is the explanation why I first used GoD instead of GoDD for Blood: I simply forgot to count in the lost HS with GoD. By using GoD you gain 1 DS and sacrifice 1 PS 1 IT and 1 HS for it. The 3 strikes combined deal more damage than 1 DS, making GoDD superior to GoD. It was a mistake from my side, but it's fixed now.
12.12.09: Major overhaul of the guide due to the SS nerf. Basically all sections but Frost have been updated. Check out the F.A.Q. as well, I have added two questions at the bottom and edited some answers because they don't hold true anymore.
12.09.09: Changed the Unholy spec to inlcude Glyph of Disease even for single target because after some testing it turned out to be better than Glyph of Dark Death. In addition some links have been fixed.
